{"id":1661,"date":"2013-02-23T12:15:46","date_gmt":"2013-02-23T17:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/?p=1661"},"modified":"2013-02-23T17:45:22","modified_gmt":"2013-02-23T22:45:22","slug":"little-building-big-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/little-building-big-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Building, Big City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every once in a while, I&#8217;ll see a subject, and I will instantly know the type of shot I want to make. \u00a0Sometimes, I&#8217;ll take some shots and get it right away&#8230;other times, the light isn&#8217;t right, or you don&#8217;t quite know how you want to go about capturing it.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those shots, and I have walked past this little sandwich shop many times. \u00a0It&#8217;s housed in an older brick building and surrounded by much taller more modern structures. \u00a0It always feels so out of place and dwarfed by the newer buildings. \u00a0I&#8217;ve wanted to take this shot for a long time, but it never turned out right or there were too many cars.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I was walking around with the GH3 and Olympus 17mm f\/1.8, and walked past here again. \u00a0My first thought was &#8216;man, and now I don&#8217;t have my 7-14 with me.&#8217; \u00a0But then I thought again, and decided to just use the 17mm and do a stitch. \u00a0So I took 9 photos in two rows and went on my way.<\/p>\n<p>When I got home, I pulled the RAW files into Photoshop CS6 and stitched them using Photoshop&#8217;s Photomerge tool. \u00a0The resulting image out of the stitch looked like this below:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1663\" style=\"width: 1040px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jj_stitch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1663\" alt=\"Image after stitching, but before correction and black and white conversion\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jj_stitch.jpg\" width=\"1040\" height=\"717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jj_stitch.jpg 1040w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jj_stitch-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jj_stitch-1024x705.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1040px) 100vw, 1040px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image after stitching, but before correction and black and white conversion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Needless to say, not quite what I was going for. \u00a0However, CS6 has an amazing tool called &#8220;Adaptive Wide Angle&#8221; and it can take photos like that above and allow you to specify curved lines that should be straight&#8230;even horribly wonky ones, and it will morph the image to keep those straight. \u00a0Due to the distortion from the stitch, I actually had to use around 8 different lines to get the final result.<\/p>\n<p>To finish the picture, I did two different developments in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, one for the sky and one for the buildings, and merged them. \u00a0I brought down exposure on the surrounding buildings and brought up exposure on the little building, then did some light dodging and burning to finish it up. \u00a0The final result is below (click to enlarge), and I have to say, it&#8217;s almost exactly what I had in my mind from the beginning. \u00a0Satisfying when it comes together.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1668\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1668\" style=\"width: 1016px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jimmy_johns2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1668\" alt=\"LIttle Building, Big City - Panasonic GH3 with Olympus 17mm f\/1.8 (click to enlarge)\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jimmy_johns2.jpg\" width=\"1016\" height=\"850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jimmy_johns2.jpg 1016w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/jimmy_johns2-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1016px) 100vw, 1016px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LIttle Building, Big City &#8211; Panasonic GH3 with Olympus 17mm f\/1.8 (click to enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every once in a while, I&#8217;ll see a subject, and I will instantly know the type of shot I want to make. \u00a0Sometimes, I&#8217;ll take some shots and get it right away&#8230;other times, the light isn&#8217;t right, or you don&#8217;t quite know how you want to go about capturing it.
