The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 for Micro 4/3, which is a similar pancake design with the same field of view can focus nearly twice as close, at 7.9 inches. The modest maximum magnification of 1:10 left me wanting for the ability to get just a little bit closer for some shots.

You can see what a small package the XF 27mm makes with the Fujifilm X-M1

The focus ring operates very smoothly, though I wish there was a little more resistance here. The programming for the focus-by-wire allows for rather quick manual focus should you choose to engage it, going from near to far in about 180 degrees. This is just about perfect, and makes manual focus with the 27mm quite enjoyable, especially with focus peaking activated.

Since there is no dedicated aperture ring, the rear wheel on all Fuji X-Series bodies is used to control the aperture setting. Users of the X-Pro 1 and X-E1 possibly will need to update their firmware to use this lens, unless they’ve taken advantage of the most recent firmware updates.

The autofocus motor in the XF 27mm is a standard micro-motor, and is relatively loud. The speed of the autofocus is a mixed bag; sometimes it can grab focus extremely quickly, but when focusing a little further away than the previous subject, it takes longer, as it searches forward, then back. It’s about on par in speed with the XF 35mm f/1.4. Autofocus is generally accurate, though I did notice that the 27mm has a little harder time with low contrast subjects than most of the other Fuji lenses. In some cases, it acts similar to the way the Fuji X cameras and lenses acted prior to the latest firmware update, occasionally failing to find focus and throwing up the red AF box. This wasn’t a common occurrence, but it happened enough for me to notice it.

Continue: Image Quality

Image Quality

Sharpness

Gold Details – Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 @ f/5 (click to enlarge)

The XF 27mm f/2.8 is a sharp lens over most of the frame right from f/2.8. Center sharpness is excellent at f/2.8 and the edges are a little bit softer, but even edge and corner sharpness is acceptable at all apertures. You can simply worry about selecting which aperture gives you the desired depth of field, rather than worrying about stopping down to get to a certain level of sharpness. That said, stopped down to f/5.6 or so, the 27mm is capable of resolving very high levels of detail.

The only exception to this is near minimum focus distance, where the lens softens up a bit at wider apertures.

Click on the image on the right and select the green arrow at the bottom of the enlarged version to see a large-sized image from the XF 27mm at f/5.

Bokeh

At the Computer – Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 @ f/2.8

The moderate maximum aperture of f/2.8 and the semi-wide 27mm focal length means that you’re not going to get a ton of blur with the 27mm, though it is still possible to get decent subject separation. Unfortunately, the quality of the blur you do get is mediocre. It’s the first Fuji lens I’ve used that has a somewhat harsh bokeh signature, a byproduct of the pancake lens design. The XF 27mm’s bokeh renders some bright edges on specular highlights and a general nervousness and double-edge (nissen) bokeh at certain focus distances. Only near the minimum focus distance does the blur smooth out a bit.

On the good hand, while not exceptional, the bokeh from the 27mm f/2.8 is also not horribly distracting either. At medium focus distances it gives shots a little character which you may or may not enjoy. I find the bokeh acceptable for a pancake lens and it gives the lens a little different look than what you get with the Fuji 35mm f/1.4.

Chromatic Aberration and Distortion

The XF 27mm f/2.8 is, rather surprisingly, essentially completely free of any visible chromatic aberration. There is no visible lateral CA visible at any aperture and even longitudinal CA and fringing is extremely well controlled. An excellent performance here.

The 27mm f/2.8 also manages to control distortion very well, with any distortion negligible in field use. These two things are quite impressive for a pancake lens.

Contrast, Color and Flare

The XF 27mm f/2.8 produces images with nice solid contrast with moderate microcontrast. There’s really nothing particularly special about the color out of the XF 27mm…it’s nice and even with a neutral color balance and moderate saturation. It doesn’t necessarily provide a lot of pop out of camera, but it sets up well for post processing, as only minor adjustments are needed to get whatever look you may be after.

The 27mm f/2.8 does fairly well against bright light, which is good since there is no lens hood for this lens. In most situations, complex flare is absent, even when shooting into the sun. If you have a really bright light source relatively close to the lens, you can get it to produce some interesting flare artifacts, but for general shooting, i found it to be a complete non-issue. You can get some loss of contrast from veiling flare when a bright source is just out of frame, however.

Continue: Conclusion and Image Samples

Conclusion

Pros

Extremely small, lightweight and well-built

Quite sharp over the majority of the frame right from f/2.8 and very good across the frame at all apertures.

Excellent control of chromatic aberration

Good distortion control

Manual focus throw is well calibrated

Cons

Autofocus is a bit loud, average in speed and can fail to find focus sometimes in low light

No aperture ring

Relatively long minimum focus distance

A little expensive given the modest maximum aperture

Overall, the Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 is a pleasant lens to use and a great option when you want the smallest possible package for your Fuji X camera. It pairs especially well with the tiny X-M1, creating a very portable package capable of very good image quality.

The 27mm f/2.8 is sharp at most any aperture, and while the edges are a little softer than the center, they are plenty sharp enough for most any use. This little pancake controls chromatic aberrations and fringing extremely well, and I feel that overall image quality is quite good, though bokeh is rather unremarkable.

Ultimately, if you want a very small lens with very good image quality in a nice all-purpose focal length, the XF 27mm f/2.8 will fit the bill quite nicely. I was left wanting for a few things, however. For the $450 asking price, I would have much rather seen a faster aperture, as an f/2.8 prime lens isn’t exactly a speed demon. I would have much preferred this to be an f/2.0 or even f/2.4 lens given the price. I also lament the loss of the aperture ring on the lens, though I somewhat understand its removal due to the limited space on the lens barrel. I also ran into the lens’ minimum focus distance fairly regularly.

I think for most users, the 35mm f/1.4 is a more useful lens, given the two full stops faster aperture, better bokeh and aperture ring, but if you prefer a little wider view and need the smallest lens you can get for the Fuji X system, then the 27mm is your lens.

Image Samples

Homeless Man –
