other lenses, such as the FE 35mm f/2.8 for Sony E-Mount. The rubber just makes it difficult to feel the ring moving. This lack of tactile feedback is a bit odd, and while the lens focuses just fine in manual focus mode, I think the rubber focus ring needs to go.

The aperture ring on the Touit 32mm f/1.8 is also rubberized, but the click-stops for aperture settings provide that tactile feedback that’s lacking on the focus ring. The detents for the aperture ring are a little too small for my liking, however, making it rather easy to inadvertently change the aperture setting.

Size-wise, the 32mm f/1.8 is nearly identical to the Fuji 35mm f/1.4. The lens handles well on the camera and feels well-balanced in the field.

Focus Performance

One weak area with the Touit 32mm f/1.8 is in focus speed. It’s a relatively pokey lens in the autofocus department. While it’s not appreciably slower than the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 when using CDAF focusing on something like the X-E1, it lacks the proper firmware to take advantage of Fuji’s phase-detection capability on the X-E2 and X-T1. As a result, that slow speed is present on all bodies as of this time. Zeiss has hinted that a firmware update to enable PDAF focusing is coming soon, but so far it has not materialized.

I did find focus accuracy to be fine, though the lens tended to hunt a bit in lower light. Overall, it’s not a lens that you’ll use when you need quick response, but it does just fine if you’re photographic static subjects.

Continue: Image Quality

Image Quality

Sharpness

Columbus Club – Fujifilm X-E2 with Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Planar T* @ f/1.8

One other thing of note is that the lens produces some cone-shaped specular highlights at the edges of the frame wide open. I expect some mechanical vignetting of highlights on extremely fast lenses (which usually show a cat’s eye appearance), but it’s odd to see it on an f/1.8 normal lens, especially producing asymmetric highlights.

Color, Contrast and Chromatic Aberration

Aside from sharpness, Zeiss lenses are known for having what is often termed ‘3D pop.’ That is, the contrast and falloff to out of focus areas adds depth and impact to an image. While the Touit 32mm doesn’t represent this as well as many other Zeiss lenses I’ve used in the past, it does have a very nice strong contrast profile with excellent color reproduction. Images are a little lower in contrast at f/1.8, but the lens still produces plenty of impact at wide apertures. Stopped down, the Touit 32mm f/1.8 puts out very contrasty images with good fine detail and gradation.

Unfortunately, Chromatic Aberration is a bit of a weak spot with the Touit 32mm. The lens produces very visible lateral chromatic aberration, seen as a cyan and magenta fringe that intensifies as you near the image corners. The lateral CA is present at all apertures. It’s worth noting that Lightroom can correct this CA using its automatic chromatic aberration correction tools, so this may be a minor point, though it does affect the edge resolution to some degree.

Distortion, Flare and Vignetting

I’ve seen reports that the Touit 32mm uses in-camera software corrections for distortion and vignetting. However, I don’t generally see these in most instances, and even Capture One seems to be implementing them on this lens. Whether corrected in software or not, the final images show very minimal distortion and minimal vignetting at wide apertures to boot. You shouldn’t need to worry about either in day-to-day shooting.

The Touit 32mm f/1.8 also puts in a good showing in flare resistance. While the included hood eliminates most instances of flare, the 32mm shows good resistance even when the sun is in the frame. When the sun is just out of frame, there is a minor loss of contrast near the light source, but it’s still quite minimal.

Continue: Conclusion and Image Samples

Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Planar T*

Conclusion

Pros

Very solidly built metal lens barrel with tight construction and smooth operation

Very sharp wide open across the majority of the image frame

Rich color and contrast produces that nice Zeiss look

Excellent resistance to flare

Good control of image distortion and vignetting (though it appears to have some software correction)

Cons

Image edges and corners show minimal improvement stopped down, remaining slightly soft even at small apertures

Bokeh is unremarkable, showing nervousness and asymmetrical highlights at wide apertures

Autofocus is somewhat slow

Pronounced lateral chromatic aberration (though this can be corrected in post-processing)

Price

When Zeiss announced the Touit 32mm f/1.8, my first thought was, “this had better be one heck of an optic for that price.” And indeed, to justify the $1,000 price tag on the Fuji X mount, it did need to be exceptional. Unfortunately, the Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 is merely ‘very good.’ As a result, the high price tag is rather hard to justify, especially when Fuji’s own 35mm f/1.4 is 2/3 stop faster and has several advantages over this Zeiss lens.

However, if you’re looking for very high image sharpness at wide apertures and the classic high contrast rich color Zeiss look, the price tag may not be a deterrent. Indeed, Zeiss have created a lens that is very sharp right from f/1.8 and produces images with saturated color and high contrast. On the down side, the Touit 32mm surprisingly doesn’t ever reach outstanding territory on the image edges with regards to sharpness, and suffers from somewhat nervous bokeh at f/1.8.

While chromatic aberrations are present at all apertures, the Touit 32mm does have remarkable resistance to flare and good control of other lens aberrations, resulting in images that for the most part are quite impressive right out of camera. The Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Planar T* is a very good lens, but it falls short of exceptional. That makes it incredibly hard to recommend in lieu of the Fuji XF 35mm f/1.4.

Sample Images

Trail of the Snow Roller –
