{"id":3396,"date":"2014-04-25T20:12:29","date_gmt":"2014-04-26T01:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/?p=3396"},"modified":"2014-04-25T22:52:50","modified_gmt":"2014-04-26T03:52:50","slug":"thoughts-samyang-8mm-fisheye-version-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/thoughts-samyang-8mm-fisheye-version-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"First Impressions: Rokinon (Samyang) 8mm Fisheye Version II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the quieter announcements from Samyang last month (whose lenses are marketed around the world under the Rokinon, Bower, Walimex and other brand names) was an update to their 8mm fisheye lens for mirrorless cameras. \u00a0I&#8217;ve owned the original 8mm f\/2.8 fisheye for Fuji X mount for around a year, and I <a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/review-rokinon-samyang-8mm-f2-8-fisheye-fujifilm-x-mount\/\">reviewed it last year<\/a>. \u00a0Despite the understated announcement, version II of the Samyang 8mm f\/2.8 fisheye is not a minor revision of the lens, but a completely new optical design with the same specs. \u00a0The new lens has one more element, but also features two aspherical elements and three extra-low-dispersion elements, compared to the one aspherical and two ED elements in the original design.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3412\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3412\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheyes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3412\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheyes-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Two Rokinon 8mm Fisheyes - Version I on the X-M1 to the left, Version II on the X-E2 to the right\" width=\"620\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheyes-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheyes-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheyes.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two Rokinon 8mm Fisheyes &#8211; Version I on the X-M1 to the left, Version II on the X-E2 to the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well, today I received a copy of this new version of the 8mm f\/2.8, and it is apparent immediately that the lens has been updated. \u00a0The new version is slightly longer and heavier (though still quite small), while sporting a more modern looking manual focus ring. \u00a0The focus ring is very well damped and the aperture ring features nice solid click stops every half stop. Looking at the rear of each lens shows you that this wasn&#8217;t a minor optical update. \u00a0The rear element on the Version II lens is significantly larger than the original.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3411\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3411\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheye_rear.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3411\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheye_rear-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"fisheye_rear\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheye_rear-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheye_rear-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fisheye_rear.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rear elements &#8211;
