The 90mm f/2 completes Fuji’s standard prime kit, and has been highly anticipated. Early reports point to this lens being simply stunning, so I was eager to get my hands on it. Let’s dive in.

The Fuji XF 90mm f/2 R WR

If you’re not familiar with my reviews, I review from a real world shooting perspective. I review products on how they act for me as a photographic tool.

Construction and Handling

If you already own a few Fuji X-series prime lenses, then you have a good idea of the construction of the 90mm f/2. The 90mm f/2 has an all-metal exterior construction with a broad focus ring and a dedicated aperture ring. The lens is solidly constructed with no creaks or wobbles and feels like a very high-end piece of kit. The only thing that gives pause is the floating focus element, which is held in place by electromagnets. As such, when there is no power to the lens, the focus element is free to move in the lens body. If you tilt the lens when it’s detached from the camera, you can hear an audible thunk as the element moves inside the lens body.

The XF 90mm f/2 on the Fuji X-T1

The focus ring on the XF 90mm is very broad and has excellent damping. Like all Fuji X lenses, focus is by wire, but the feel of the ring is excellent and manual focus is a breeze with this lens. The aperture ring on the XF 90 is similarly excellent. In what feels like a great Fuji Aperture Ring Lottery, the 90mm hits the jackpot, with a beautifully firm and clicky ring that is difficult to accidentally knock out of place. I’m unsure why there is such variance in the stiffness of Fuji aperture rings, but it would be great if they made all of them like the one on the 90mm.

The 90mm f/2 is the second Fuji prime to come with the WR designation for weather resistance. The typical gasketing found on all Fuji’s WR lenses is found here, with a lens mount gasket and what I assume are tighter tolerances around the edges. I didn’t get a chance to shoot in inclement weather during my time with the lens, but with my experience with other WR lenses, I’d feel comfortable shooting for short periods during light rain, but would make sure to add a rain cover if shooting in a downpour or for an extended time in wet locations.

The 90mm f/2 comes with a deep lens hood that reverses close to the lens body, adding minimal width in the bag. I do have to say that the 90mm isn’t a small lens. It’s a bit shorter and a bit lighter than the XF 55-200mm, and as such it’ll take up some space in the bag. I did feel it handled fairly well in the field however, and felt better on the camera than it appears when handling just the lens by itself. This is definitely a lens that you’ll want to use on a camera that has a decent grip, however. Handling on the X-T1 or X-E2 with the add-on grip feels nice and at home, while a bare X-E2 or the smaller X-M and X-A bodies will feel a bit lopsided.

I have to say, though, I’m very glad that the exterior design was changed from what I first saw at Photokina last September. The mockup presented there was a bit shorter than this final design, but significantly fatter, which would have caused much larger issues in fitting into camera bags and handling on cameras with narrower grips.

With the hood mounted, the XF 90mm has a fair bit of length

Autofocus

The XF 90mm f/2 is the first Fuji X prime lens to receive Fuji’s fast and silent linear motor system, and it performs very well indeed. Focus locks quickly and accurately in good light, and only slows down a bit in lower light. I experienced very minimal hunting of focus during my shooting with the lens, and as you’d expect, the operation is essentially noiseless. One great thing about the 90mm is its close-focus abilities. The lens can focus to 0.6m, which provides an image with 0.2x magnification, making it an excellent lens for shooting pictures of flowers and other closeups. While it’s not a macro lens, the close-focus abilities give the 90mm some extra versatility lacking in many portrait primes.

I tested the lens on my X-T1 with firmware v. 4.0 and found the lens very capable at keeping up in continuous autofocus functions as well. I took several test runs with my daughter running full blast at close range to me, and achieved a very high success rate of in-focus shots. Most surprising to me was the fact that the lens didn’t really slow down the burst rate much when shooting in CAF, as can often happen with slower focusing lenses. The shot below was taken after my daughter ran at full speed to kick the ball at me. Almost every shot leading up to the kick, including this one, was in focus.

Kickball – Fujifilm X-T1 with Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 @ f/2 (CAF)

While the lens is weathersealed with an excellent fast and quiet focus motor, there is one Fuji letter designation I’d have liked to have seen on the lens: OIS. Because the 90mm f/2 has a fairly narrow field of view, higher shutter speeds are required to handhold the lens and maintain sharp shots. For me, I found that around 1/160s was what I felt comfortable using to get consistently sharp results. With the f/2 aperture, this generally meant shooting at ISO 3200 or higher indoors. OIS would have been great to let me shoot at around 1/60s or lower and keep the ISO down a bit. I also found that the 135mm effective field of view was long enough that my own vibration was a bit distracting in the viewfinder after using so many stabilized longer lenses over the years.

Continue: Image Quality

Image Quality

Here’s the meat of this review: image quality. There’s been a lot of buzz around the image quality for this lens, and I found out very quickly it’s for good reason. In short, the quality of the XF 90mm is absolutely superb.

Sharpness

The XF 90mm f/2 R is a very sharp lens. Right from f/2 over almost the entire frame, the lens is capable of tack sharp images. The last bit of the edges and corners show a little softening at further focus distances, but are still good. Stopping down to f/4 yields razor sharp images across the entire image. Simply put, pick the aperture for the depth of field you want and don’t worry about anything else: you’ll get sharp images. Of course, stopping down to f/16 or so will show softening due to diffraction, but that’s a physics limitation, not a lens limitation.

Chalk – Fujifilm X-T1 with Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR @ f/2

The image above was taken at f/2 and shows very sharp results at the focus point. Click here to view a 100% crop at the point of focus.

Bokeh

Critical for portrait lenses is the quality of the out of focus areas. While the XF 56mm f/1.2 showed good bokeh with a bit of character (and some bright outlining of specular highlights), the XF 90mm f/2 has nearly technically perfect bokeh. Out of focus areas are smooth and even and specular highlights are perfectly evenly illuminated, with a very slight falloff at the edge which just melts the blur disc into the other colors. There is no outlining, no double edges, no bokeh fringing: it’s just smooth and even. Because the 90mm f/2 doesn’t use aspherical elements, there is also no onion ring centers to highlights. What’s amazing to me, and what you’ll be able to notice in the image samples, is that the bokeh retains its smoothness at all focus distances, in both the foreground and the background.

Red and Yellow – Fujifilm X-T1 with Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 @ f/2

One thing to note is that the contrast, which I’ll get into more in a second, is strong throughout the image frame, which means the bokeh does retain high contrast as well. While everything remains smooth and even, a high contrast background will retain a high contrast look. This isn’t bad to me, but some prefer a bit of softness and haze in the background for the ultimate in creaminess, and the high background contrast can make the background retain some bite in the right circumstances. However, to my eye, the XF 90mm has the best bokeh of any lens in the Fuji X system.

Color, Contrast and Chromatic Aberration

The Fuji 90mm keeps high image contrast and rich, vibrant color throughout the aperture range, with no apparent loss of contrast at the widest apertures. This results in images with real presence, and a fair bit of what many call ‘3D pop.’ Indeed, the high image contrast and sharpness combined with the smooth bokeh can make distant subjects really pop out of the frame, such as in the shot below.

In the Alley – Fujifilm X-T1 with Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 @ f/2 (Click to enlarge)

Remarkably, the lens also controls chromatic aberration extremely well. Lateral CA is negligible and even longitudinal CA is extremely well controlled. No purple fringing was evident in my shooting on high contrast subjects.

Distortion, Flare and Vignetting

The hits keep coming in these departments as well. I’m sorry for such short descriptions here, but there’s really nothing to describe. The lens has virtually no distortion, which isn’t surprising, as medium telephotos generally don’t have a problem with distortion. However, the lens also controls vignetting very well. There is some slight darkening at the corners at f/2, but even this isn’t particularly field relevant. Stopped down it’s essentially absent. Against bright light, again, I didn’t see much in the way of flare. I have seen a few other tests where the shooter was able to induce rather nasty flares with small apertures, but I never encountered it in my shooting, perhaps because of the narrow field of view and the fact I always used the hood. In any case, I don’t think it’s much to worry about.

The Fuji XF 90mm f/2 is nearly flawless optically. That’s not to say that there aren’t better lenses in the world, but it is truly one of the finest lenses I’ve ever used, with no real weaknesses and a very strong showing in all departments. Fuji’s outdone themselves here.

Continue: Conclusion and Image Samples

Conclusion

Pros

Impeccable image quality

Very sharp right from f/2 over almost the entire frame and brilliantly sharp from corner to corner stopped down

Exceptional bokeh: smooth and even with no outlining or other bokeh faults

Brilliant color and contrast provides images that pop

Extremely well corrected for lens aberrations: minimal CA, low vignetting and good distortion control

Fast, silent and accurate autofocus

Excellent close-focus capabilities

Solidly constructed with excellent damping on the focus and aperture rings

Weathersealing provides protection against dust and moisture

Price

Cons

It’s a moderately large and heavy lens

No image stabilization

Fuji’s outdone themselves with the 90mm f/2 R LM WR. I actually don’t generally like reviewing lenses this good. I mean, I do: it’s great to use such exceptional glass, but it’s hard to write the reviews for such excellent glass without coming off as a shill. But with the 90mm f/2, it really has to be said: the lens is exceptional. I really only have two complaints: it’s a bit big and heavy for a mirrorless lens, but to be honest, it’s not that much bigger than most fast 85/90mm lenses. I also did very much miss image stabilization, and the lack of it does limit the lens’ usefulness in low light, especially for indoor candid photography.

However, everything else is about as good as can possibly be. The lens focuses quickly and quietly, is brilliantly sharp right from f/2, has beautifully even and smooth bokeh, has virtually zero CA, no distortion and outstanding color and contrast. I noted the $949 price as a Pro above, and that’s because typically lenses this good cost a fair bit more than this. It’s hands down the best lens Fuji has created for the X-Series and one of the finest lenses I’ve used for any system. If you like the medium telephoto focal length and shoot Fuji, simply get it.

Image Samples

Click on an image to enlarge

Dog Walking Group –
