{"id":5850,"date":"2015-11-25T22:15:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-26T03:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/?p=5850"},"modified":"2024-09-05T17:01:49","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T22:01:49","slug":"fuji-35mm-f1-4-vs-fuji-35mm-f2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/fuji-35mm-f1-4-vs-fuji-35mm-f2\/","title":{"rendered":"Fuji 35mm f\/1.4 vs. Fuji 35mm f\/2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, I&#8217;m pitting the original lens for the X-Series, the venerable XF 35mm f\/1.4 R against the new normal prime, the XF 35mm f\/2 R WR, a slightly more compact and weather resistant lens that has just been released for the X-Series of interchangeable lens cameras. &nbsp;The lenses carry the same field of view and have a one stop difference in aperture. &nbsp;Which should you get? &nbsp;Is the new lens better than the relatively good 35mm f\/1.4? &nbsp;Let&#8217;s find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/xf35s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/xf35s.jpg\" alt=\"X-E2 with 35mm f\/2 WR and X-T1 with 35mm f\/1.4\" class=\"wp-image-5852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/xf35s.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/xf35s-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/xf35s-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">X-E2 with 35mm f\/2 WR and X-T1 with 35mm f\/1.4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lenses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The two lenses share a lot in common, but differ in several key ways. &nbsp;Both lenses are constructed with a solid metal shell and are roughly the same overall size. &nbsp;The new XF 35mm f\/2 tapers towards the end of the lens and is very slightly shorter, so it looks smaller than it really is. &nbsp;The 35mm f\/2 is a bit more solidly constructed than its f\/1.4 brother, and has some weather resistance as well, but both are well-built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest physical difference between the two is the focusing system used. &nbsp;The f\/2 lens is an internally focusing lens, so the lens always stays a constant length. &nbsp;The f\/1.4 lens uses an extension focusing system, so the front element will move in and out as the lens focuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mechanically, the focus motor in the 35mm f\/1.4 is probably the loudest of all X-series lenses. &nbsp;The new f\/2 lens has a completely silent and very fast focusing motor. &nbsp;The f\/2 is definitely a faster performer in the autofocus department, and in my experience, hunts a bit less in very dim light as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Test #1 &#8211; 100% Center Crops (Click to Enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the center performance, the two lenses perform very close to each other. &nbsp;While the 35mm f\/1.4 shows a touch of softness at f\/1.4, it sharpens up a fair bit at f\/2, and the new XF 35mm f\/2 looks to be very slightly behind the f\/1.4 lens when both are at f\/2. &nbsp;Stopping down to f\/2.8 flips things a bit, with the 35mm f\/2 taking a slight lead. By f\/4, both lenses are exceptionally sharp, and there&#8217;s very little difference at smaller apertures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Edge Sharpness<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s take a look at the edge. &nbsp;The crops below were taken from the lower left edge. &nbsp; As you&#8217;ll see, this is where the 35mm f\/2 begins to separate itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_close.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2802\" height=\"930\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_close.jpg\" alt=\"35mm f\/1.4 vs. 35mm f\/2 - 100% Edge Crops (Click to Enlarge)\" class=\"wp-image-5856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_close.jpg 2802w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_close-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_close-1024x340.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2802px) 100vw, 2802px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">XF35mm f\/1.4 vs. XF 35mm f\/2 &#8211; 100% Edge Crops (Click to Enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While the center resolution was very similar overall, the edge crops tell a different story. &nbsp;At wide apertures, the 35mm f\/1.4 is quite soft, especially at f\/1.4. &nbsp;It&#8217;s not until f\/5.6 that things start to show decent resolution, and it takes until f\/8 to really be called acceptably sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the XF 35mm f\/2 shows some edge softness at f\/2, but even here the lens shows better resolution than the f\/1.4 lens does at f\/4. &nbsp;Stopping down to f\/2.8 improves things dramatically, producing very good resolution already. &nbsp;By f\/4, the edge at this point is very sharp and the 35mm f\/2 maintains a lead across the frame all the way to f\/8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As far as resolution goes, the new XF 35mm f\/2 is showing a distinct advantage across the frame at this focus distance, especially at wider apertures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bokeh<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, we&#8217;ll look at the bokeh. Again, click the image below to view full size. However, the overall character is quite similar. &nbsp;We&#8217;ll call this one a draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Close Up Findings<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At this 1m focus distance, the XF 35mm f\/2 is showing to be the sharper lens across the frame while maintaining similar bokeh to its older brother. &nbsp;At this distance, the 35mm f\/2 is the superior lens, provided you don&#8217;t need that potentially all-important full stop of aperture. &nbsp;That extra speed gets you lower ISO in dim condition and better subject separation when shooting shallow depth of field. 100% Center Crops (Click to Enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, both lenses perform fairly well, but already we see some minor differences from the close up test. &nbsp;Here, the XF 35mm f\/1.4 isn&#8217;t as sharp at wide apertures as it is closer up. &nbsp;The XF 35mm f\/2 is sharper at both f\/2 and f\/2.8. &nbsp;It&#8217;s not until f\/4 that the 35mm f\/1.4 catches up and produces images of similar sharpness to its younger brother. &nbsp;Other than the resolution differences, however, the lenses show very similar levels of contrast and almost identical color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Edge Performance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are 100% crops from the left edge of the frame. &nbsp;Again, this is where the lenses show notable differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_inf.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2802\" height=\"930\" src=\"http:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_inf.jpg\" alt=\"XF 35mm f\/1.4 vs. XF 35mm f\/2 - 100% Edge Crops (Click to Enlarge)\" class=\"wp-image-5857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_inf.jpg 2802w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_inf-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admiringlight.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/35_edge_inf-1024x340.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2802px) 100vw, 2802px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">XF 35mm f\/1.4 vs. XF 35mm f\/2 &#8211; 100% Edge Crops (Click to Enlarge)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the 35mm f\/2 shows a very strong lead on the edge of the frame vs. the 35mm f\/1.4. &nbsp;It takes until f\/5.6 for the 35mm f\/1.4 to show similar sharpness on the edge to the 35mm f\/2 wide open. &nbsp;While the 35mm f\/2 is clearly sharper at wide apertures, at f\/8, the 35mm f\/1.4 actually takes a slight lead. &nbsp;Partly this is due to the fact that at infinity, the 35mm f\/2 shows essentially no improvement at the edge upon stopping down. &nbsp;It&#8217;s not quite as sharp across the frame at infinity as it is closer up, but this is still a pretty strong performance. &nbsp;It&#8217;s worth noting that the lens shows the added close-up sharpness through most of the focus range.
