On my way home late from work today, I decided to make a bookend post. You may recall that I posted earlier with motion shots from my car on my morning commute a while back. Well, the vibrant lights of the city at night make for much better evening abstracts. Here are my two favorites.

Wow, these are cool, congrats! Looked at the Exif data – 8 seconds for the first, and one for the second image. How do you figure out the relation between the speed of your car and that of the camera? And how do you set this while driving? Hmmm…
Well, while driving, I basically fudge it, since I DON’T look at the camera. I keep my eyes on the road and my attention on the traffic. When I am at a stoplight, I’ll change settings, or if I feel the exposure was too long or something, I’ll just swipe the wheel a few times. I don’t look at the settings at all and basically go by feel of the camera. I then stick the camera up on my dash, generally point it in the area I think I want it to be and hit the button. I don’t concentrate on precise aiming or focus or settings, since to do so would be quite dangerous. Shutter speed was adjusted basically on ‘that seemed too short, I’ll stop down’ and ‘that was too long, I’ll open up.’
I have my camera in my bag on the passenger seat, and when traffic is clear and I’m not in stop/go situations or merging or such, I pull the camera out, put it up and hit the button, then place it back in the bag. I’m not driving around swapping things all over the place and adjusting angles while driving. 🙂
Aaahh now I see – thanks for explaining. Oh, and by the way: tho I really like your technical articles like camera comparisons and such, I like your photos even more. You have a great site here!
…..Stop taking pictures while your driving !!!!!!
(Concerned parental safety message)
…… They were pretty cool however.
Also, the font on the comment reponses is coming through extremely faded and way too light… very difficult to read ; and I have a big monitor.
Keep up the good work.
Dad
I love that your dad comes on your website worried that his son is putting himself in danger. I’m 65 and still worry about my 30-year-old daughter like that! Drives her mad sometimes. Was/is your dad a photographer? Is that where you got ‘the bug’?
PS: found your website by happy accident, looking for info on the new Olympus OMD-EM5. Thanks for a very informative review. I’m ordering mine today!
